A major milestone for the CORE (Calgary Eaton Centre, TD Square and Holt Renfrew Building) in the multi-million dollar redevelopment project was achieved on November 12th with the installation of the world’s largest point-supported structural glass skylight.
The massive skylight spans three city blocks, seamlessly linking the CORE and its three centres together while flooding the Devonian Gardens and plazas below with natural light that emulates an outdoor promenade. Creating a park-like setting within the CORE is part of the overall vision for the redevelopment project.
The skylight installation began in February 2009.The skylight is roughly the equivalent size of a professional football field that runs 26 by 200 metres. There are 1740 pieces of glass supported by a series of 95 arches that each weigh 2500 kg. The CORE’s redevelopment project is slated for completion in the fall of 2010.
