Today, Downtown Calgary staff along with Standard Life (639 - 5th Avenue SW) employees and tenants, plan to hold a seeding event in their office tower between 11:30 and 1:30. What’s a “seeding event”, you ask? Well everyone there plans to roll up their sleeves to work the soil and plant vegetable seeds. Staff members will then coax and coddle their little seedlings in their offices, boardrooms, coffee break rooms, etc. until mid-May. At that point, the little green sprouts will be ready for their big debut and will be moved into what were once decorative flower planters in their public plus 15 space (10 planters in total). Carrots, lettuce, herbs and the like will be left to bask in all that great spring and summertime sunlight Calgary is known for. Staff and tenants will adopt the planters and keep them well-watered and weed and squirrel-free - with the hopes of yielding some great vegetable crops. Finally, the veggies and herbs will be donated to local organizations such as the Calgary Drop-in Centre and the Interfaith Food bank.
Here’s an excerpt from the Calgary Centre City Blog about a great event downtown just in time for Earth Day. I’ll post some after-photos so you can see how it went. If it makes you you think “Well, why isn’t my building doing something like that?” contact Downtown Calgary and we can help you get started.
