Location-based games are becoming more and more popular as smartphones with GPS get in more and more people’s pockets. Foursquare (written about by Wil Knoll very recently) is one of these location based games. Another is geocaching.
Geocaching started in May of 2000 around the time the locks came off of handheld GPS units and their accuracy became increased. Today the accuracy (and relatively low cost) of a handheld GPS unit makes it so this game can be played by almost anyone. You don’t even need to have a smartphone to play this game, it can be played with any handheld GPS device. (more…)

Way more productive than Farmville
Just over a month ago, FourSquare added Calgary to the list of supported cities that it’s users could play in. Calgary had joined the ranks of New York, Barcelona, and Vancouver as metropolitan areas that users could battle in for ownership of physical locations.
For the uninitiated, FourSquare is almost an augmented reality game. Users get points for checking into physical locations, like the local pub or eatery, and battle for position on the weekly leader board. A check in at a new location gets you five points if you’re the first person to create the venue, and five points for your first visit there. But that’s just the tip. Geolocation connects you to advice left by other players, there are unlock-able achievements, and people battle for the coveted “Mayorship” of their favourite locales.

Sitting in the upstairs bar at the Anju Restaurant and Lounge is a pretty good feeling. A decent view of downtown and some nice quiet music makes for a nice dining experience, even if a large plasma TV above the bar is spewing out images of grown men fighting in a cage. You can’t win ‘em all.
An impressive drink selection is the perfect compliment to Anju’s Korean cuisine, which offers different appetizers and meals in increments of 5, 10, 15 and 20 dollars. (more…)

To celebrate Stylocity, Art Central made models into works of art and had them strut through the venue on September 10. We could write about how awe-inspiring, creative, and amazing the show was, but instead, we will show pictures so you can see for yourself.

Wednesday afternoon rush hour crowds were treated to a style frenzy as models dressed in the latest looks from Kismet and Persona took to the streets running and striking a pose for the style-stunned onlookers.
With the help from the founders of Alberta Fashion Week, five models were escorted by the fashion police and paparazzi as they made their way through the plus 15s and out to street level putting on guerrilla style fashions shows for the crowds as they made their way out of the core.
This show really reminded everyone of the kind of style the downtown core has to offer and really put Stylocity on the move.

Made famous through TV commercials, You Tube and a Bond movie, Parkour has become a stylish new way to interact with the urban environment. Running through, around and over obstacles, Parkour is characterized by speed, agility, and coordination.
Calgary has its very own Parkour group, No Limits , and they have been using downtown as their playground.
To help with Stylocity – a week of fashion, food, fitness, art, accessories and entertainment in downtown Calgary – No Limits put on a Parkour demonstration at Eau Claire market. Choreographed to music, the men and women of No Limits ran, jumped, flipped, and generally flew through a routine that amazed all those who stopped to watch.
Next time you’re downtown, stop to watch these guys in one of the many spaces they use to practice – you’ll be amazed.
