Whether you’re competing for Top Chef or in Top Office, locals in Calgary love their downtown food vendors.
Connie DeSousa should know a thing or two about “street meat” being that she is one of the masterminds behind the famous “Alley Burger”. Connie is also a Co-Owner and Chef at CHARCUT Roast House and is currently competing for the title of Top Chef Canada on the Food Network.
Who’s your favourite downtown food cart vendor?
Lucky me. I enjoyed a sneak preview and taste of Sidewalk Citizen Bakery’s new cargo bike goodies by Aviv Fried. He is due to pop up soon along Stephen Avenue offering organic baked goods made with local ingredients. Follow your nose and keep your eyes open for his catching smile. Aviv is a rare talent with delicious baked treats.
What makes it your favourite?
There are some fun food carts downtown operated by an eclectic mix of personalities. But few shine like Aviv. I favour his innovative approach to selling his goods by bike, his approachable yet charismatic manner and his absolutely delicious mastery of the art of baking!
What do you normally order?
Aviv’s magnificent scones! Driving home the other day I confess I ate an entire loaf of bread and called it a snack. Absolutely moreish! His breads so remind me of my favourite bakeries in NY and San Francisco. Nostalgic flavours and a beautiful feast for the eyes.
If you could pick any type of food you’d like to see on the street that isn’t currently there what would it be?
Hmmmm….great burgers and duck-fat fries?!
If you want to try a scone from the Sidewalk Citizen Bakery they will be set up in front of Scotia Centre on Stephen Avenue on Tuesdays and Thursdays for summer 2011.
From falafels to waffles, the Calgary street food scene is a diverse array of tasty treats with more to look forward to on the horizon.
We’ll have Mayor Nenshi’s favourites next week for you. What other local celebrities would you like to hear from?
