What’s Up Downtown Calgary? Victoria Day Long Weekend Entertainment Guide

by JaronW · 0 comments

For those of us who’d rather not test mother nature’s annual wrath this weekend, there is a lot going on in the city.

If you’re like me, and roughing it involves a baguette and a bottle of red wine in a city park, then you’re probably looking around for something to do while your MEC-head friends gallivant in the snow and drink their faces off in the name of our once glorious sovereign. Thankfully for you, I’ve taken some time to put together a couple of events that are going on this weekend Downtown.

Play! A Video Game Symphony - May 18th & 19th - If you can drag yourself away from playing Diablo 3 long enough to take in some culture, you’ll definitely want to check out Play! Featuring symphonic recreations of your favourite video game scores, and perhaps a selection or two you wouldn’t expect. Just two nights of performances until it’s game over.

Jon McCaslin CD release at Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club - May 18th & 19th - Canadian jazz drummer Jon McCaslin presents his latest album Sunalta. The evening’s performances will include musicians Jon McCaslin (Drums), Jim Brenan (Tenor Sax) & Rubim de Toledo (Bass) with special guests Brad Turner (Trumpet) from Vancouver and Tom Van Seters (Piano) from Edmonton.

The Shakeout @ The Palomino - May 18th & 19th - There is almost too much music going on at the Palomino to mention. Bands like Peer Support, Axis of Conversation, Girlfriends & Boyfriends, The Mountaineer, Winter Mitts, Baby Driver, The Getdown, The Pygmies and the Sissies will be taking part in the 2nd Annual iteration of this rock & roll festival.

Classical, Jazz and Punk Rock, if that isn’t enough music to satisfy you then be sure check our Downtown Calgary Events Page for everything going on this weekend!
