October 18th marks a very important date in Canadian history. It is the anniversary of the Persons Case of 1929 when women achieved status as “Persons” in Canada.
This time of year, we honour the five Alberta women who fought to have women recognized as persons under the British North America Act (BNA Act) of 1867. This landmark decision by the British Privy Council, the highest level for legal appeals in Canada at the time, was a milestone victory for the rights of women in Canada.
In celebration, of this day and the 5 trailblazers that made it happen, the Famous 5 Foundation would like you to join them on Wednesday, October 17th for Person 2 Person, an evening of connections, champagne, and chocolate at the Art Gallery of Calgary.
It will be a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to remarkable women from the past, present and future.
The keynote speaker for the evening, Annette Stanwick, will talk about community and why we achieve more together than apart. More details can be found here.
The significant accomplishments of The Famous 5 will also be celebrated at another event at noon on Thursday, October 18, which is the 83rd Anniversary of the ‘Persons’ Case.
This one hour event, held beside The Famous 5 monument at Olympic Plaza, will include spoken word poet Sheri-D Wilson performing with Lin Elder on percussion, and musical performances by St. Sebastian School Grade Four Children’s Choir, Joni Delaurier, and Carolyn Harley and friends. Local author and historian, Nancy Millar, as well as representatives of the Famous 5 Foundation, will also be on site to share insights and information.
Attendees are invited to wear a hat in honour of The Famous 5 and chat with others about the significance of these amazing women in our lives today.
The Famous 5 Foundation also invites you to attend the next event in their Speaker Series on November 15th at the Fairmont Palliser’s Crystal Ballroom. The series profiles extraordinarily successful women. November’s speaker, Nicole Bourque-Bouchier, CEO, The Bouchier Group, will focus on how to “Live Inspired.” More details can be found here.
