It’s not everyday that you can have brunch, so if you make it to Cucina early enough on a Saturday, start your meal off right - with ricotta fritters. They’re made fresh to order and arrive beautifully presented with some apricot jam. Don’t skip the jam! It’s delicious. The fritters themselves are golden and crispy on the outside, but perfectly tender on the inside. There are six in an order, which was the right amount for two, but if you’re with more people, save yourself the agony of waiting and get two orders.
Next, it’s time to decide on a main. There doesn’t seem to be a bad choice on the menu. The french toast was delicious. Not too soft in the middle, sprinkled with toasted pine nuts and a burst of citrus that was a welcome flavour in the morning. The croque madame, filled with cured ham from Broek Acres and topped with a fried egg, was a success. Down the bar, the mushrooms and poached eggs on toast looked like a great no-meat, savoury choice.
And if you try the BBJ sandwich, give us your take in the comments.
The atmosphere at Cucina is lively and warm, the perfect antidote to a cold Calgary morning. Seating is a bit tight, depending on what’s available, but don’t let that deter you, it adds to the atmosphere.
