Canon has opened up shop in 8th avenue place, and it’s like no shop you’ve ever seen before. In fact, it’s not really a shop at all, nothing is for sale even though they have thousands of dollars worth camera equipment at the ready.
A first in North America, the Canon Image Square is an interactive digital imaging space that acts like the show room of a high-end electronics boutique, but without any of the pressure of dealing with commissioned sales people.
Visitors to Canon Image Square can browse the 6,600 sq ft. area and learn about every single camera, lens and printer Canon has available with interactive elements that will show you the device’s features, and show you how to make the most out it.
Like many retail stores that sell cameras, the many offerings are tethered to a display table ready for the eager hands of shoppers. Unlike many retail stores, the cameras at Canon’s Image Square are fully functional, have amazing origami/papercraft landscapes for would-be photographers to practice on, and all of the cameras are connected to a central system which allow visitors to send the shots they take to large touch screens and to their personal emails.
Canon’s hope with this Calgary-first initiative is to help people find the exact camera to meet their needs, and give them a place where they can relax, play and have a little fun with a camera before making a purchase. When you’re ready to buy, the staff can find a Canon dealer where you can conveniently purchase your new camera.
Additionally, Image Square has space for photography seminars, and hopes to partner with Calgary schools for photography field-trips in the near future.
Canon has really pulled out all the stops with this new space in the heart of downtown Calgary, stop by the next time you’re out shopping or over your lunch hour. Even if you’re not in the market for a new camera, printer, lens or anything else, it’s worth it just to see the giant touch screens and papercraft land/city scapes.

Very cool idea - but why not have a stock room in the back and a sales centre?
