Cinderella’s iconic glass slipper pales in comparison to what BURST has in store for Calgary on May 25th, when the global glass community will unite for a runway show of glass couture at Eighth Avenue Place.
Runway fashion show meets high-end art gallery, this delight for the eyes will dazzle under the lights as each ensemble has been designed with glass as the focal point or an incorporated element.
Guests at BURST will be treated to 29 glass couture pieces from around the world featuring glass techniques of cast, blown, flame-worked, hot sculpted and cold worked. The international line-up includes accomplished glass artists from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, and Japan.
The images above show Calgary based artist, Carissa Baktay, modeling one of her own pieces called ‘Absence Felt’. Each ruffle is made of glass and the piece weighs a 50lbs and takes two really strong people to put on.
Show producer Emily Barnett of SQ Commons is very excited to see work by Teresa Burrows, from Thompson, Manitoba (pictured directly above).
“She creates magnificent traditional glass beadwork ceremonial wear. Her beaded images sometimes tell haunting stories such as Singing Over The Bones Siren Dress. Her work succeeds in artistic excellence; she is a master at what she does, and her concepts behind each laborious piece dig deep into the tradition of visual storey telling.”
Barnett and her partner Bart Habermiller’s intense love and knowledge of glass art has resulted in regular requests to curate private viewings for high profile collectors like Sir Elton John.
Attendees can also look forward to tasty eats from the highly popular Cucina bistro.
BURST is a fundraiser for Museum of Contemporary ARt (MOCA). More information and ticket info here.
