Sled Island Gets Greener

by Shannon McNeney · 0 comments

Each year at the Calgary Downtown Association’s Annual General Meeting, we have an awards presentation that recognizes numerous businesses and organizations for their significant achievements in enhancing the vitality of Downtown Calgary.

Left to right: Chris Grant & Laura Grant, Directors, Alberta Bike Swap, Peter Maitland, Director, Sled Island, and Colin Smith, Green Island Sustainability Coordinator, Sled Island

These businesses and organizations help to meet the CDA’s mission to champion a vital, prosperous, attractive, and livable downtown community for everyone to enjoy.

Among the 2012 Downtown Vitality Award recipients, presented on May 2, 2013, were Sled Island and Alberta Bike Swap for “Enhancing the Downtown through Streetscape Improvements” with their bike racks.

Watch for them in various locations downtown when Sled Island, Calgary’s beloved music and arts festival, hits town June 19-22.

Sled Island’s commitment to being an environmentally conscious festival is reflected in the expansion of their Green Island initiatives for 2013.

New ideas this year include a bike valet service at Olympic Plaza and East Village, and expanded bike parking at the #1 Legion, Palomino and Flames Central.  More information on Green Island, including their waste reduction efforts can be found here.

For those who  don’t want to wait for the festival to start to bust out your bikes, there will be a pre-festival Green Island Bike Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, June 16th. More details here.
