The word “dey” comes from a branch of West African broken English and perfectly encapsulates the purpose of the annual Afrikadey! festival. Put on by the Afrikadey! Arts & Culture Society, the purpose of the society and festival is to enrich the Calgary community’s knowledge of the diverse cultures of the African continent and diaspora.
The Afrikadey! 2013 festival will be taking over Prince’s Island Park on August 10 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. with an amazing line-up of artists. GRAMMY award winning artist and actor Common will be headlining the festival, bringing his words and rhythms to the island to contribute to this year’s theme of “celebrating our common human heritage.”
You don’t need to shell out $25 in advance just to see Common though. We have a line-up of awesome artists ready to take over the stage, including PAPAGROOVE, Soukous Stars, the Afro Culture Dancers, Diely Mori Tounkara and Souls in Rhythm. Some young artists will be joining them as well, with teen powerhouses Caitlin Herring, Positive Rhymes and Princess Roda ready to take the stage and rip it apart with their stunning pipes and rhymes.
While you check out the musical acts you can meander on over to the food and art vendors. There are trinkets, jewellery, merchandise, clothing, hair products and more available from our fantastic vendors, alongside a variety of food ready for chowing down on.
Afrikadey! always proves to be an invigorating time, with food and drummers, dancers and singers, a kids area, crafts and, of course, the beer garden. Seize the chance to see Common live for $25, $30 at the gate.
