Danielle Kondruk and I first met over email a few years back as we worked for two separate arts companies in Calgary, and when we finally had a chance to say hello in person, it was her personal style that really caught my attention, although it’s been her humour and personality that really lead the two of us into a great friendship. It has taken me over four years to talk her into being in front of my camera, and I couldn’t be happier that she’s finally agreed to let me showcase her personal style in photo form.
Each time I see Kondruk, she’s always put together, stylish and chic. It’s apparent that she puts thought and care into her personal style and always looks like a million bucks, no matter if it’s for a fashion event, theatre show or a cocktail at a local pub.
As she continues to do cool things in our city, while always showcasing her style and flair, she plans to keep her creativity and ideas in serious motion. She took a bit of time from her busy schedule to answer some of my questions about her inspirations, fashion choices and where she hangs out in YYC.
How would you describe your personal style?
I gravitate towards classic, clean lines with an edge to lady-like, figure flattering shapes - occasionally I’ll play with pattern if I decide to veer away from my beloved black and gold colour palette. After all, animal print is my spirit animal.
What are some of your influences when it comes to fashion?
I get inspiration from fashion blogs, magazines, runway trends, celebrities, and my fashionable friends. I often find that when I have a specific vision, the pieces I want don’t exist. Maybe I should look into getting a sketch artist and seamstress on payroll?
What are some of your favourite stores and shopping destinations in Downtown Calgary?
You can’t really beat The Core for one-stop-shopping. It’s really sad that we’ve lost, and continue to lose, some really great stand-alone boutiques.
What are some of your favourite trends for Summer 2014?
Black and white or all white; Printed pants (I’m still searching for the best floral pattern), and bold lips in orange or hot pink.
What fashion advice would you give to others?
Don’t let anyone discourage you if you have a vision or are drawn to something. It’s one thing to roll around in last night’s makeup (which is only occasionally acceptable) or ill-fitting clothing but quite another to be bold enough to try something different because you want to express yourself. Also, learn how to take compliments - beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What are some of your favourite YYC spots (Downtown Core)?
Almost too many to list! My absolutely favs: Glenbow Museum, The Globe Theatre, Charcut, Palomino (for live music too!), Cafe Rosso, Stillwater Spa in the Hyatt, and Nanta Karaoke Bar.
Where were you born and raised?
I’m proud to be Newfoundland-born (that should explain a lot) but raised in Alberta - I’ve been here for many years though, so Calgary has become home.
Why do you choose Calgary as your home? Do you plan on staying here, why/why not?
I have cultivated such an amazing group of friends and professional network. Although at times I fight it, Calgary is a pretty great city to live and work. Bottom line though, it’s great human beings that make for a good quality of life. As for the future, who knows!
Where do you work/position? How does your job dictate your personal style?
I am an account executive for Quintaro Graphics Studio. We fabricate custom architectural graphics and reproduce art. I’m pretty lucky in the sense that I do not work in an overly conservative environment. I’m always meeting with clients so I still need to dress professionally; it’s typically business casual with a stylish edge, just like the work we do.
What are some of your future aspirations?
I have so many, I just need to kick myself into high gear to get the ball rolling! Launching a creative writing project (I absolutely need to share the stories I have collected over the years), volunteering, starting a band, a jaunt to Europe (France or Spain), amateur-night stand up, and starting my own business.
