When I first started shooting, and much before my Street Style Huntress career really took off, I would take my camera with me just to photograph the world. I shot architecture, flowers, the ocean, trees, and of course, people. People doing cool things. People just sitting on benches and hanging out on the beach. If it caught my attention and I liked it for some reason, I photographed it, even if it was a dead leaf floating in a murky rain puddle. With my background as a photo journalist, the candid moments speak the most to me, and I think it’s that inquisitiveness and passion that really lead me to photograph stylish people - I somehow had to incorporate my love of photo journalism and fashion and bring it all together.
It was long overdue, but I recently watched the lovely documentary, Finding Vivian Maier. Her work is full of passion and the candid journalistic flare that I absolutely love. She was able to capture people in their environment and really showcase their individuality and beauty. I love how she incorporated portraits of herself in her work - and most of all, that she kept her art to herself. Do we really need validation from others, or should our art just be feeding us individually as we create it? I know I can answer one thing - seeing the film was a great and inspiring moment for me.
The film reminded me that I don’t do enough of that anymore - just take my camera for a stroll, for the sake of capturing the world and feeding my own passion and love of photographing what’s around me. And so, this installment of the Street Style Huntress is all about that - candid moments, people on the street doing what they do, and of course, those showcasing their artistic flare through their personal fashion.
