Monogram Coffee has recently joined the downtown neighbourhood at Fifth Avenue Place, located on the corner of 2nd Street & 5th Ave on the ground floor.
I was lured into their lovely new bright and open space by a photo I saw on Instagram of their seasonal beverage - a vanilla-cardamom latte. The syrup is made in-house, and isn’t too sweet so as to overwhelm the flavor of their delicious espresso. It was a unique treat and I have been back many times since.
Their baked goods are amazing quality, many of which are from the new Alforno Bakery & Café, part of the Teatro Group’s family of restaurants. The gruyere and prosciutto scone is truly the best I’ve had in Calgary.
If you’re in the mood for something a little sweeter, they often carry “Pop Tarts” by Pretty Sweet Co, among other delights. The Blackberry Pop Tart with a London Fog glaze was pretty fabulous. Make sure you get them heated up in their toaster oven, they’re a bit delicate for a regular toaster.
For those who need their coffee NOW, they have a very cool “Honour Bar” set up. You can serve yourself with their on-tap coffee, grab a pastry, and checkout with a tablet all on your own. If you love simple, plain coffee this is so much better than waiting in a big line up behind more complicated orders, especially when you’re in a hurry to get to a meeting!
The owners, Jeremy Ho, Ben Put, and Justin Eyford all worked together at Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters before starting their own venture with their collective skills and knowledge. There are many accolades between the three, including Put, who is the 2014 and 2015 Canadian Barista Champion, as well as number 3 in the World Barista Championships. Ho, was the 2012 Canadian Barista Champion. So, it’s safe to say you’re in good hands!
One thing that struck me about Monogram is that they seem to really love what they do, and have a great desire to be a part of the downtown community. One of the company’s core philosophies is the belief that exceptional coffee should inspire wonder and warmth, and let me tell you, they’ve nailed it.
Monogram is open Monday-Friday: 6:00am-5:00pm, and Saturday-Sunday: 8:00am-4:00pm.
