A new hot spot has recently opened up near the Bow River and it is a must-see if you love pastries, coffee and people watching. Alforno Cafe + Bakery is the name and exquisite baked goods is their game. Part of the Teatro Group, this light and bright cafe is steps from the Bow River on the West end of downtown in Eau Claire.
Alforno has become an instant hit for foodies in Calgary, thanks to the beautiful interiors (and exteriors), delicious baked goods and menu items, tasty coffee and impressive wine list. It is the perfect place to meet up with friends for a brunch date, excellent for a dinner out and is ideal for grabbing a quick coffee and pastry for a walk around the river. Alforno is only minutes from the Peace Bridge - it is an ideal area to enjoy great food, architecture and nature simultaneously.
We popped in to grab a light morning snack as well as coffees. As someone who is gluten-free, I wasn’t expecting there would be much available for me to munch on. Was I ever surprised! Not only did they have plenty of delicious gluten-free desserts available but many of them were just as exquisitely created as the gluten-filled ones. I ordered a slice of the Orange Almond Ricotta Cake and was in utter heaven coupled with my soy latte. My husband tried a couple different pastries including the Kouign Amann and the Strawberry Rhubarb Crostada. Both came with rave reviews and did not disappoint.
I should warn you that Alforno does get super busy during peak hours! While there are several seating areas in the cafe, you’ll need to come early or be on the lookout to snag a spot during the busy times. Outside the cafe, there are lots of benches to enjoy your espresso and croissant al fresco. Overall, Alforno is a fantastic destination if you are looking for a place that is the full package - and of course, is very photogenic for your Instagram.
