One of the great things about our city is that there is much opportunity to do cool things, and not only that, to implement them for the first time. So it’s wonderful to see when people actually step it up and make great things happen - enter CANIFFF - Canadian International Fashion Film Festival, taking place right here in Calgary. And not only is it happening in Calgary, but it’s being brought to you by some seriously stylish and passionate Calgarians!
The festival takes place on July 22 & 23 at Glenbow Museum, and will explore the shifting landscape of fashion in film, which has become the fastest growing medium in the industry. The festival will screen films adjudicated by industry experts, and will feature guests Ace Norton and Lars Ruch from Commondeer Production Company who will be hosting a screening and panel discussion.
There’s so much more that I could tell you about the festival here, but instead, I urge you to read more on their website, and more importantly, purchase tickets and attend this first ever festival - so exciting!
And in the meantime, some photos and great fashion and Calgary insights from some of the lovely people involved in bringing CANIFFF to life!
Katrina Olson - Director/Co-Founder
What are some of your favourite stores and shopping destinations in Downtown Calgary?
I love Holt Renfrew. It has always been a staple for me. I also love The Core. Winter weekends are so much more tolerable when you can have an afternoon out (but really in because the parking is underground)
What are some of your favourite Downtown YYC spots?
The Globe theatre, Theatre Junction Grand and the Glenbow.
What are some of your favourite trends right now?
I love flat form sandals and pre-fall brightly colored florals.
What fashion advice would you give to others?
Don’t wear yoga/sweat pants or boyfriend jeans for any extended period of time. Sometimes putting on a tight cigarette pant or skinny jeans is the reality check you need. Ha ha! At least in my case. Honestly, I don’t tend to give advice, I just share or wear stuff I like. “Fashion is like music: there are so many notes….You need to play around with them. We all have to make our own tune”- Karl Lagerfeld
Tiffany Bong - Graphic Designer
How would you describe your personal style?
Cute meets grunge, maybe? I’m versatile. I like alternative or punk fashion but I also like to get a little girly sometimes - it just depends on my mood or the weather. I like playful accessories and prints.
What are some of your influences when it comes to fashion?
I’ve always loved Japanese street fashion because you can always find styles that are incredibly fun and unique.
What are some of your favourite Downtown YYC spots?
Prince’s Island Park, The Unicorn, Alforno Cafe and Bakery, and Charcut for their “lunch all at once” because you get a bag of warm cookies!
What fashion advice would you give to others?
Wear whatever makes you happy.
Madison Mackey - University of Calgary Faculty of Arts Communications Team
What are some of your influences when it comes to fashion?
I’m constantly influenced by those around me – friends, co-workers, strangers. I especially love traveling to other cities/countries and discovering what the sense of style is like there; I think the environment you live in plays quite a significant role in your sense of style. When it’s not possible to travel, social media is obviously a great resource for inspiration. Instagram is definitely my favourite as it provides you with the opportunity to view such a wide variety of well curated selections without actually having to subscribe to 100+ fashion and design magazines.
How did you get involved with CANIFFF and why are you excited about it? Why should everyone check it out?
In one of my classes at the University of Calgary it was mentioned that there was an upcoming fashion film festival that was looking for student interns. Having always been passionate about fashion and the various ways it can be expressed, I immediately jumped at the opportunity to participate. I’m excited for CANIFFF as it provides the opportunity to showcase and recognize the top and emerging talent in fashion film. It is also very exciting to have Calgary at the forefront of this emerging genre of film. Everyone, and not just fashion lovers, should check out CANIFFF for the amazing schedule including a panel discussion with industry experts like Niccolo Montanari, a luxury party, an awards ceremony and, of course, several fashion film screenings!
Anything you’d like to add or tell us about?
If you’re interested in checking out what fashion films look like a good place to start is with Ace Norton’s films for brand Rhiè (who is also one of CANIFFF’s guest speakers), and Gia Coppola’s recent films for Dior. Also, anything by the production collective CANADA is amazing.
Evie Eshpeter - Public Relations
How would you describe your personal style?
Minimalistic and classic. My style icons are Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. As far as fashion goes, I sometimes feel like I’m living in the wrong era. But these women still influence styles today and designers like Zac Posen exude the same level of elegance and sophistication in gorgeous, contemporary designs.
What are some of your favourite Downtown YYC spots?
Charcut (yes please!), Cucina (absolutely) and Township 24, our host of the CANIFFF 2016 media launch. We couldn’t have picked a better location for that event.
How did you get involved with CANIFFF and why are you excited about it?
Antonija Klotz, one of the festival co-founders, recruited me. I immediately wanted to be involved. Calgary has never seen anything like CANIFFF before. Yes, we’ve had film festivals and fashion shows but nothing like this – this is different. CANIFFF has captured the attention of the international fashion and fashion film industry, putting our city on the map like never before.
Anything you’d like to add or tell us about?
CANIFFF is open to everyone and we welcome you to check it out. Tickets are still available but going quick. Visit www.CANIFFF.com/tickets/.
