HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE #1

by Kait Kucy · 0 comments

As the holidays quickly approach, we are all running out of time to get those last minute shopping days in order. Luckily, there are plenty of fabulous spots in downtown Calgary that will be sure to excite and thrill your gift recipients. This year it is more important than ever to shop local and support small businesses in the downtown area. This gift guide features a variety of cool and interesting gifts at places that you might not normally do your Christmas shopping at.

Etsy and Glenbow Museum recently announced 14 talented artists selected to sell their work at the Glenbow Museum Shop as part of the Etsy at Glenbow partnership. The selected artists include: Ashleigh Amber Moore, Master Arks, chinook forge, Dana Roman Silk , March8studio, Suspended Studio, Maple and Oak Designs, RPS Creations,  Kho Kho Designs, Little Rock, illo leather, Steph Simpson Photo, Thedor and Black En Blanche. The collection launched on November 17th and includes tons of great gift ideas for anyone who loves art and handmade items. Beyond the Etsy collection, the Glenbow Museum Shop also carries an amazing selection of locally made ceramics, jewellery and books.

Just down the street, Market Collective has filled the shelves at the brand-new Phil & Sebastian coffee shop (102 8th Ave SW) on Stephen Avenue, providing more opportunities to shop from local artists and makers. The specially curated selection offers up beautiful art objects, jewellery and more from some of the amazing Market Collective vendors. I love this partnership between two really great local companies.

Speaking of Market Collective, this coming weekend is their last holiday market before Christmas so you’ll want to pop by the Chinese Cultural Centre (197 1st Street SW) for some great local shopping on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are also so many great local shops in Chinatown and Eau Claire - you’ll be sure to find something perfect for everyone on your list.

Beyond these great local finds, you’ll also want to check out the selection of fantastic gift ideas around downtown. Notably, the Rocky Mountain Soap Company at CORE Shopping is an Alberta-based company that has tons of great holiday gift sets including their famous Vanilla Candy Cane Gift Set. Also located at The CORE, Land & Sea carries a huge selection of fun gift ideas for everyone from your co-worker to your best friend. They carry Wrinkle & Crease, a beautiful local stationary company that makes beautiful notebooks and paper products. Indigo also carries a wide selection of local authors including food writer Julie Van Rosendaal. Her 2016 release Out of the Orchard will be sure to inspire any budding baker or Okanagan fruit lover this holiday season.

Stay tuned for more great gift ideas found in downtown Calgary!
