You Should Go: Contemporary Calgary

by Kait Kucy · 0 comments

If you’ve been looking to get a fix of contemporary and modern art here in Calgary, you’ll definitely want to check out the latest programming from Contemporary Calgary. Located conveniently on Stephen Avenue, Contemporary Calgary is free and open to the public, five days a week.

While their current space is beautiful, with three floors of exhibition space, I am beyond excited for their new location that will be opening next year at the Centennial Planetarium. It is going to be a fully immersive art experience with the entire building

There is FREE public programming for kids and adults, including Contemporary Kids, Late Night Thursday, and Lunch Time Tours.

CONTEMPORARY KIDS
Paper Cities
Saturday, April 9, 2022
2:00-4:00 PM | FREE

Each iteration of this monthly series will focus on one specific artwork, artist, or theme found in our current exhibitions, welcoming families for a brief tour followed by an engaging activity developed specifically for children, ages 5-12.

Paper Cities will have children cut, colour, and arrange reproductions of well-known monuments, linking to exhibiting artist Kotama Bouabane’s photography, to travel the world and create their own city of famous monuments.

Registration required.

LATE NIGHT THURSDAY
Fritz Lang’s Metropolis
Saturday, April 22, 2022
6:00-9:00 PM | FREE

Combining film screenings, local guest speakers, cocktails, coffee, music, and food, Late Nights at Contemporary Calgary invites Calgarians to learn about contemporary art, architecture, and design while enjoying a night out with friends.

For the inaugural Late Night Thursday, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis will be screening in the Top Gallery. This cult film portrays a futuristic urban dystopia inspired by the visual language of Art Deco and German Expressionism.

LUNCH TOUR
Art of Our Times
Every Wednesday, 12:10-12:50 PM | FREE

Held over the lunch hour, this weekly series invites Calgarians working in the downtown core to enjoy their lunch while they listen to an intriguing talk developed on an ongoing basis, each tying our ongoing exhibitions to current events

UTOPIA LOUNGE
Until April 28, 2017

Visit the Utopia Lounge for a popup coffee shop hosted by Kaffeeklatsch, a living wall created by Simons, and a reading room presented in partnership with Shelf Life Books, featuring texts selected by exhibiting artists and curators.
