July 19, 2017, food critic and writer John Gilchrist joined Breakfast Television to discuss some of his suggestions of where to take out-of-town friends and family for an impressive meal and experience in Downtown Calgary.
Buchannan’s Chop House has been around for nearly 30 years. It’s your classic chophouse with tradition style and wood interior. Buchanan’s also has a whisky bar with the best selection of whisky in the city. For food, they offer up two styles of burgers because “it’s all about the beef”. They do have other menu items for those that prefer a lighter option. On Saturdays, they offer a three-course special that is paired with wine to give you and your guests a special evening at an exceptional value of just $39.00.
If you are looking for a “good meaty-kind of meal”, you’ll want to take your guests to Charcut. They have been around for seven years now and are home to celebrity chefs John Jackson and Connie DeSousa. They do all of their butchery in house, where Connie boasts skinning a pig’s head in an impressive 45 seconds! John suggests getting the prime rib sandwich, which he claims is the best he has ever had.
While there are plenty of patios along Stephen Avenue, there is one that is a wonderful place to get up off the ground and that is Natoinal on 8th. It’s fabulous views encourages you to look up at the skyscrapers surrounding while creating a space to hangout, play bean-bag toss or ping pong. Their beer menu is longer than their food menu, offering a great way to show off the local beers. The food is great and overall is a great place to relax in the middle of downtown.
