Time for a little confession - I completely online “hunted” Abbie Brokenshire for her style. I’m always on the lookout for fresh and unique faces to feature for my Street Style Huntress adventures, and so when I asked a friend who is attending the Fashion Institute at Bow Valley College in downtown Calgary for costume design to recommend a friend or fellow student and she mentioned Brokenshire, I naturally had to hunt through her Facebook account to check out her personal style. And I knew instantly that she would be a great fit!
She’s on-trend yet with a personal flair attached, and you can tell that she enjoys clothing and expressing herself through her style and daily outfits - and as it turns out, we enjoy shopping at some of the same local boutiques in Calgary - so yay to that! #shoplocal
What I enjoy about this particular outfit is that she kept it cool and simple - but I’ll let Abbie tell you more about herself and her personal style, her current endeavour as a costuming student, and more…
How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as a quirky combination of both modern and vintage pieces. I enjoy a mesh of both the past and present, as well as a tasteful union of both classic and trendy in my wardrobe.
What are some of your influences when it comes to fashion?
I definitely find plenty of influence and inspiration within my peer group at the fashion institute as well as downtown Calgary. Runway shows, Vogue magazine and other style bloggers especially locally based bloggers such as Julie Redmond (@style_by_jr) also tend to inspire and influence the trends and styles that I purchase for my own closet.
What are some of your favourite stores and shopping destinations in Downtown Calgary?
I love scoping out vintage and consignment stores, locally owned boutiques and small businesses when expanding my wardrobe.
What are some of your favourite trends right now?
I love that tons of vintage prints and pieces are making a HUGE come back- 70’s inspired plaids and furs, retro hats and collars, couch florals and big belts are a few of my favourite!
What fashion advice would you give to others?
Create your own calling card - wear what you like and feel most comfortable and identifiable in. Discovering your own personal style is such a vulnerable and individual process, why not wear garments that you truly feel comfortable wearing and showcasing? Be bold, be you!
Tell us more about the projects and work that you’re involved with.
Right now I’m completing my first semester at the Olds College Fashion Institute - learning about the fashion industry and all it has to offer is currently a full time occupation!
What are some of your future aspirations?
After completing my major in costume cutting and construction at the institute I would really like to dive head first into the costuming and theatre industry or try my hand at historical garment restoration.
How does your work influence your personal style?
Being part of such an open and creative atmosphere definitely pushes me to be more open and creative in the way I dress and present myself to others - also whatever collects the least amount of lint and thread from the workshops!
