Pecha Kucha Night #2 “How We Live Together”

December 1st, 2009 by Wil Knoll

We are all in this together.

Following up on the success of Pecha Kucha Night #1 back in September, Calgary Arts Development is hosting Pecha Kucha Night #2 on Thursday, at The Uptown Stage and Screen.

PKN #1, which went down over at The Grand mid-September was a solid night where speakers and audience alike felt out the formula that PKN challenges us with. Each speaker must use 20 slides, and the slides auto-advance at 20 second intervals. For some speakers it became a bit of a slog to catch up with the all the thoughts they wanted to cram in on each slide, for others, one image could remain onscreen while they were almost silent, letting us drink it in. For the best, the 20 seconds framed thoughts from their stories perfectly and the energy in the room would shoot up.

First Down(town) Food Fest : River Cafe

November 26th, 2009 by Lisa Murphy-Lamb

With the Grey Cup, Calgary is offering a chance to eat more than hotdogs and chips-or whatever Grey Cup day fare you may traditionally indulge in.  The First Down(Town) Food Fest is well under way offering Calgarians and visitors a chance to get into the game by sampling Grey Cup-inspired pre-set menus for lunch ($15), dinner ($25) or gourmet ($85).

I chose the River Café.  It’s on my running route and I like how it looks nestled on Prince’s Island.  I also like how it smells and attracts patio dwellers in the summer.  This time I made a lunch reservation for two.  But this time I didn’t need it.  There were plenty of available tables.  We got one by the window to watch the other runners, the strollers and the Canadian geese. Kawasaki Exit sampling preview

November 13th, 2009 by Wil Knoll

No, I’m the Japanese Robert Deniro

One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo is just months away. This is a good thing. This means that it’s closer than it was yesterday. The High Performance Rodeo can be the burning highlight of a sun deprived winter for a theatre patron with stamina. Three whole weeks of good times…

The Rodeo also serves as a premiere for new work that the ensemble puts together. And last weekend, OYR gave us a sampling of Kawasaki Exit, a new work written and directed by Blake Brooker.

Last Night - an end of the world party

November 12th, 2009 by Wil Knoll

Better than hiding in a bunker and waiting it out

Swallow-a-Bicycle has stumbled across the truth. The world isn’t going to end in 2012. The government has not been secretly building arks to save a lucky few. The world ends this week. Friday night actually.

Or at least that is the back drop for Last Night - an end of the world party. Friday, the 13th of November, The Palomino will be playing host to one last big throw down. Swallow-A-Bicycle is trying to cover all of your end of the world needs, with a graffiti wall to scrawl on, a party priest to confess those guilty moments too, and music from Seven Story Redhead, The Shagbots and Type Monkey Type. Since it’s our last night on earth, we are invited to wear what we will.

Fairy Tales’ Shorts for all Sorts Preview

November 6th, 2009 by Wil Knoll

Seriously, I’ll be selling drink tickets.

Next Tuesday the Fairy Tales Diversity Film Festival is going against the cooling trend in weather and busting out the shorts for one last go round. The Shorts for All Sorts: Queer Film Quickies screening will be at The Uptown, starting at 7:30 pm.

The Fairy Tales Film Festival has been running for a bit over six years now, and is still the only annual gay and lesbian film festival in Alberta. This year they have decided to split the year in half and put a short film festival at the halfway lead in to the event in May. (more…)

No Heart Feelings: A Perfect Film For The New Generation

September 30th, 2009 by Alyson McAndrews

Despite not having seen it yet, my guess is No Heart Feelings is the perfect movie for every unmarried, unpropertied and un-child-rearing 26-plus-something Canadian. A quintessential movie for depicting the challenges and choices that faces a generation who has chosen to do things differently than those before them.

A Night On The Town, CIFF Style

September 30th, 2009 by Nathan Atnikov

It’s that time of year again – a time when dinner and a movie doesn’t have to mean a $12 hamburger and Transformers 2. The Calgary International Film Festival is in town, so your choice of fine films has no limits, and the convenient location of each theatre will find you surrounded by restaurants that can’t wait to impress you. This week, my dinner and a movie combo is set for Wednesday night at the Redwater Grille Bow Valley, and the 9 p.m. showing of Unmade Beds at the Globe Theatre.

Unmade Beds comes from the United Kingdom and director Alexis Dos Santos. The film follows Axl and Vera, to East Londoners winding their way through the city and crossing paths as they try alternately to find and forget their pasts.

All Tomorrow’s Parties

I’m a sucker for musical documentaries. So when you cram Battles, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear, and Iggy and the Stoges into one guerrilla/DIY collage of chaos, of course I’m going to be there. More importantly, so should you. | More Information

45365 - If you liked Jesus Camp.

There is something strangely captivating about middle America. Be it the unsettling religious fervour, the unexpected beauty of bare crops or the lush storytelling tradition, the geographic heart of the Land of the Free has always been a favourite for documentary filmmakers. 45365 documents the happenings of Sidney, Ohio, and its residents over the course of nine months. Through the voyeurism of documentary film, 45365 presents us with a reminder that not everything is as it appears. | More Information

Dead Snow - Learn How to Kill Nazis and/or Zombies For Fun and Survival.

NAZI ZOMBIES! 475 quarts of blood! If the film’s synopsis says feelgood-nazi-zombie-splattter-comedy, well, I don’t have much of a choice. It’s like if all those video game Nazis I killed in Wolfenstine 3D were buried in the Rockies. The filmmakers obviously know their audience. | More Information
